'Ohana Retreat 2012

E kala mai for taking so long to post about 'Ohana Retreat.  We've been busy planning and preparing for upcoming events!  Mahalo nunui to everyone who came out and supported the event, we could not have done it without all of you.  Mahalo for making the day special by sharing your time, energy and aloha with all of us.  A special mahalo to the men of Team Kalea, our very own David Carden, Kaika Carden, Chris Valle, and Chris Riches for all of their hard work, dedication and aloha. All of your hard work is always noticed and always appreciated.  Mahalo to Lei Aloha O Ka 'Ohana for all of their support, and kokua, awesome job as always, ladies!  Mahalo to the ever amazing Malama Haloa O Utah for once again bringing kalo to the forefront for our people.  You guys are such a blessing. Ke Kauwela! Summertime!!!

We are excited.  We're thrilled.  We're eagerly anticipating this year's 'Ohana Retreat!!! It will be held on Saturday, August 4th at Lindon Harbor starting at 10 am.  Here's some things you'll need to know:

-Ho'ohana Competition:  What is it?? Family members in groups of 4 test their knowledge of Na Mea Hawai'i in the following areas: Wahi Pana (sacred, storied places), Language, General Knowledge and oneo other category.  How?  They'll answer trivia questions, a scavenger hunt for answers, complete puzzles and more!  FREE to enter to compete, FUN to participate in, and PRIZES will be awarded!!! To sign up to compete, just text or call 8019138980.  To keep things fair, Team may not consist of more than ONE Kumu (in any discipline).

Outrigger Canoe Races: Team Kalea, our awesome outrigger canoe club based out of Lindon Harbor will have a canoe race!  Potluck teams, 2 competitions.  18 and under, and 18 and over.  All interested in paddling will sign up and teams will be chosen and off you go!  If you've never paddled, mai hilahila!! (Don't be shy) we'll have a short canoe paddling workshop with some awesome seasoned paddlers prior to the race.  FUN!!

-Horseshoe Tournament: $2.00 entry fee per team, winner takes all.

-Ku'i Kalo: Mahalo to Malama Haloa O Utah!! Come learn how to make your own pa'i 'ai!!! Pa'i 'ai is mashed kalo with very little water, one pound of pa'i 'ai makes 2-3 pounds of poi.  There are tons of 'ONO recipes using kalo, such as poi mochi, poi andagi, pa'i 'ai pizza, pa'i 'ai cream cheese won tons and more.  Learn how to make your own, complete with cultural protocols! 'ONO!!!!

-Hula: Never danced hula?  Aunty Kathleen with Lei Aloha O Ka 'Ohana will be teaching a simple fun hula that all can do.

-Ipu Making Workshop: Led by Kupuna Vermine Haws, learn how to make your very own ipu for a minimal cost.  (Cost is to cover supplies)

Makahiki Games: Fun, great exercise and culturally invigorating!  Come test your skills and ulu maika, moa pahe'e and more!!

We are excited as once again we are coming together as a Native Hawaiian community with Hui Hawai'i O Utah Hawaiian Civic Club, Malama Haloa O Utah, Team Kalea, Lei Aloha O Ka 'Ohana as well as Kauwahi 'Anaina Hawai'i Hawaiian Civic Club all  participating to serve, support and engage our community.  All are welcome, POTLUCK meal, PLEASE BRING A DISH TO SHARE.

And so we return from Vegas....

Uplifted and inspired. It is always so great to be amongst our people, especially other civic clubs who are engaged in the invigorating work of uplifting our people.

Our congratulations to Aunty Margaret Sanborn and everyone at Pacific American Academy for receiving a $495,000.00 grant which will provide health care and access to our Native Hawaiian children and their families, accessible through their campus. Awesome work! Totally inspiring!

There were so many amazing things that came our of our most recent Mainland Council Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs meeting in Las Vegas, much of which will be featured in our upcoming Spring issue of Na Leo `Oiwi, so be on the lookout for it!

Much closer to home, however, there are many things happening, and everyone can be a part of them! First off, there is a presentation on February 28th by local girl (both here in Utah and local of Hawai`i :) ) Hokulani Aikau! Entitled "Carry Your Culture On Your Canoe, Religion, Race and Sustainable Self Determination in Hawai`i" and she will be presenting at the University of Utah. No registration information given, I'm assuming that none is required.

Additionally, there is an upcoming conference specifically for Pacific Islanders, with the theme "Ke Ala I Kou Wa'a" or "The Path To Your Canoe" The purpose of the presentation is to discuss and explore ideas, methodologies, and best practices in the persistence and retention of Pacific Islander students in higher education. The event is free, but registration is required. Please also note that the event coordinators are aware of the mis-translation on the flyer. Mahalo.

Another event that is not only happening in our community, but also which we are participating in, is the upcoming 'Ohana Saturday through Lei Aloha O Ka 'Ohana and will be at the Hawaiian Cultural Center in Midvale. This year's theme is "Live for You, Live for Us", focusing on Pacific Islander health. There will be free health screenings for the whole family! Games, Food, Entertainment! It's also a FREE event, and open to the entire community. Come check us out! We'll be selling musubis and baked goods such as mochi cake, chantilly topped cream puffs and more as a club fundraiser! All of our proceeds go towards sustaining our cultural programs and activities for our community.

Please also note that G. E. Kawika Allen is requesting the participation of our Pacific Islanders here in Utah to complete a survey! Here is what he's asking:

My name is G. E. Kawika Allen, Ph.D and I am an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Southern Utah University. I am conducting a study on Polynesians related to religiosity and psychological well being.

There is a significant lack of research on Polynesians in general. The Polynesian community has been an underrepresented cultural group in the U.S. and has particularly been poorly documented in the academic arenas. I believe that we, as Polynesians need to increase the knowledge base of others who are different from us about our culture, people, ambitions, aspirations, and family system. Through this study we hope to advance the multicultural research and literature by specifically including more accurate knowledge and information about Polynesian individuals. This study can also give a voice to Polynesian communities in Utah, and help others understand the uniqueness of this specific group and how they experience life with regard to religiosity and psychological well being.

And lastly, as this has already been a LONG post, as a fundraiser, our club also has a few copies of "Lena Machado, Songbird of Hawai`i: My memories of Aunty Lena" by Pi`olani Motta (her hanai daughter) and Kihei DeSilva. Included in the book are 30 of Aunty Lena's compositions which include 10 that have never before been released, photos, glimpses into her life and the events that inspired some of her songs, and more. The Kāpili ‘Oihana Internship Program (KOIP) is now accepting applications for college interns for the 2012 summer session and humbly asking for your support in helping to recruit students. The session operates from May 21, 2012 to August 10, 2012. All KOIP interns must commit to a site for at least 120 hours (part-time) or 240 hours (full-time) in a 12-week period. KOIP is open to all eligible applicants that are 18 years or older and currently enrolled in college.

Kāpili ‘Oihana, meaning “to build a career or profession,” strives to provide Native Hawaiian college students with the opportunity to apply academic experience in a real world environment, meet and learn from professionals in their field of interest, develop skills and competencies and build their network of contacts in hopes of increasing their hiring potential upon graduation.

To be considered, applicants must submit an online KOIP Intern Application and also provide a cover letter, a resume and verification of current college enrollment.

Internship stipends may be available through Kamehameha Schools’ Financial Aid & Scholarship Services (FASS) department. Internship stipend applications are available only to students who have been offered and have accepted a non-paid internship position through the Kāpili ‘Oihana Internship Program. Awards are limited based on the availability of funding.

Interns looking for opportunities in a variety of different fields are encouraged to apply. The deadline for internship applications submission is Wednesday, February 29, 2012. HB2875 Hawaiian Language Immersion Bill to be heard on Feb 8A

Thought this might be of interest to the many of us who are passionate about our language.

HB2875 requires that HI State Assessment tests for Hawaiian Language students grades 3-6 be given in Hawaiian rather than English. Here is a link to view the bill.

The bill will be heard on Feb. 8th by the House Committee of Hawaiian Affairs, chaired by Rep. Faye Hanohano.

FEBRUARY!

Everyone says it, "Where has the time gone?" and we'll chime in right along side them, because we're amazed that January has passed so quickly!!! Our recent club gathering this past Saturday was fun, with everyone visiting and for those of us who aren't so great at making lei (read: TINA) still enjoying everyone's company. We have a fun, and different activity planned for February, we're just waiting on some confirmations and we'll begin letting everyone know.

We do have our Mainland Council Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs quarterly gathering in February, and we're looking forward to sharing time, space and mana'o with club leaders from across the Continental United States. We hav

e a grant "boot camp" workshop scheduled, which will hopefully enabl

e us to secure funding to better assist in our people's and our community's growth.

Recent Happenings

Aloha!

It's been a while since our last posting, we hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season! Here are some of the things we've been up to.....

December 11th, we had the honor and privilege to represent our Hawaiian community here in Utah by presenting an oli and makana for Tongan Royal Princess Pilolevu Tuita at the South Towne Expo Center. This month our club gathering will be on Saturday, January 28th. We'll have a fun yarn lei making activity, and learn some basic protocols for lei making and lei giving. FUN!! Bring the family down, potluck dinner to be served, please bring a dish to share!
We are also eagerly anticipating the release of Hokulani Aikau's new book, A Chosen People A Promised Land . While we are excited when Native Hawaiian authors present their works, this one is especially exciting for us. Hokulani is the daughter of Uncle Ned and Aunty Sharon Aikau, and while that enough is cause for us to celebrate this release, the subject matter of this work is one that has relevance for so many here. We encourage you to purchase a copy!

Within the next few weeks this blog will be undergoing some reconstruction, we're excited about that. We aim to make it more user friendly. MAHALO!!!

NOVEMBER ACTIVITIES!

Aloha!!! We have some fun and exciting news!! In addition to the above listed activity, we are also pleased to announce a "Hui 'Olelo Hawai'i" (E kala mai, unable to include proper diacriticals here) which will meet twice a month for the sole purpose of practicing conversing in our mother tongue. We'll also include cultural discussion on various topics such as oli, mo'olelo, wahi pana, na mele and more! All ages and abilities welcome, absolutely free of charge!!! Stay tuned for more information!

For this month, we have a few FUN and FREE activities! We're hosting a FREE COUPONING CLASS, AND A HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE ACTIVITY FOR NA KEIKI! While that's going on we'll also have Charlene Lui speaking on Convention highlights, some of the resolutions that were highly debated, and some of the other activities that took place there as well. Potluck, please bring your favorite dish to share with everyone!!

Here we are nearing mid October, so much is happening this month, we'll try to keep you informed of the little bits and pieces that might otherwise go overlooked! :)

GREAT NEWS!
California Governor Jerry Brown also signs AB 1088 into law in California! AB 1088 requires various state agencies to disaggregate data for Native Hawaiians & Pacific Islanders & Asian Americans, allowing for us to be counted accurately enabling us to better access services and programs our people need. The numbers will be more specific, allowing organizations to be better equipped in securing funds and allowing them to better respond to the needs of our people. Now if only all states followed suit it would be great....c'mon UTAH!

Today was a "holiday". Refraining from calling it "You Know Who Day", it's instead, being called Indigenous People's Day by MANY. SO much more appropriate. Now, for all of us FIRST Peoples.....this is what our club's Facebook status read today: Us being indigenous means that we were FIRST. As in FIRST PEOPLE. Mind you, we did not merely exist, we flourished and lived as vibrant, artistic, creative and highly spiritual people. We were the first scientists, conservationists, and spiritual giants. Thank us by recognizing these facts and appreciating, NOT appropriating our Native cultures.

For the majority of us, we're all on Facebook. If you are, check out Ho'olaupa'i. It's a Native Hawaiian Newspaper Resource that is translating Hawaiian Newspaper articles and making them available for everyone to read/understand/enjoy. It is truly amazing work that they're doing, it's free, and it's beautiful! The literary contributions of our Hawaiian people are tremendous. TREMENDOUS.

Scholarship deadline and Clothing Drive!!

An important date to remember for those who are seeking or know of someone who is seeking scholarships! The Asian and Pacific Islander American Fund (APIASF) scholarship application for the class of 2012 will be available on the 1st of October

Although closed for 2011 - 2012 school year, another great resource is Liko A'e, which, unlike many other scholarships for Native Hawaiians, IS available for those on the Continent, by working through the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs! Again, although it's closed for this school year, make sure you bookmark the site! Another terrific service is that they provide scholarships for non-traditional students as well!

Our October activity is a Community Clothing Drive! With the economy, shelters and other organizations that serve the less fortunate are seeing a marked decrease in the amount of donations they receive. Please join us on October 15th for a clothing drive to help keep our community warm!!! All clothing and blanket donations will be delivered to The Road Home to assist those whose need may be greater than most of ours. Every person who donates will be automatically entered into a drawing for fun prizes! Need not be present to win! If you'd like to donate but are unable to make it that day, please feel free to call Tina at 801.913.8980 to make alternate arrangements prior to October 15th. We hope you're able to help!

July Gathering and 'Ohana Retreat!!!

Aloha!!!

We apologize for not being able to have our June gathering due to a scheduling conflict with the room we normally gather in. However, we WILL be showing the amazing film "Keepers of the Flame" by Eddie Kamae, which focuses on three INCREDIBLE Hawaiian women, Mary Puku'i, Edith Kanaka'ole and 'Iolani Luahine. Anyone interested in Hawaiian culture, history, hula won't want to miss this!!! In addition, we'll also have a free hula workshop for na keiki!!! FUN!!! Our gatherings are potluck, please bring your favorite dish to share.

We are also preparing for an 'Ohana Retreat, which will be on Saturday, August 6th at Lindon Harbor. We are so excited at being able to partner with Team Kalea, Kauwahi`Anaina Hawai`i Hawaiian Civic Club and Lei Aloha O Ka 'Ohana, making it truly a community event!!

We are VERY excited to once again be hosting a KEIKI FISHING TOURNAMENT!!! Open to kids ages 5 - 12, the tournament is FREE of charge, and no fishing license is required. However, please note, that all children participating MUST be accompanied and supervised by an parent or adult guardian AT ALL TIMES. As such, we've provided a link to download the 2011 Utah Fishing Guide which provides information on purchasing a Utah fishing license.

The tournament starts at 8:00 am sharp, on Saturday morning. Participants need to pre-register for an accurate headcount prior to the tournament as well as check in on the morning of the event.

For the `ohe kapala workshop, we will provide all materials EXCEPT the fabric to print on. Please bring your own scrap fabric pieces to practice stamping on.
