FEBRUARY!

Everyone says it, "Where has the time gone?" and we'll chime in right along side them, because we're amazed that January has passed so quickly!!! Our recent club gathering this past Saturday was fun, with everyone visiting and for those of us who aren't so great at making lei (read: TINA) still enjoying everyone's company. We have a fun, and different activity planned for February, we're just waiting on some confirmations and we'll begin letting everyone know.

We do have our Mainland Council Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs quarterly gathering in February, and we're looking forward to sharing time, space and mana'o with club leaders from across the Continental United States. We hav

e a grant "boot camp" workshop scheduled, which will hopefully enabl

e us to secure funding to better assist in our people's and our community's growth.

We do want to share some of the amazing initiatives occurring in our community, especially the amazing work of `Anapesi Ka`ili, take a look at

Recent Happenings

Aloha!

It's been a while since our last posting, we hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season! Here are some of the things we've been up to.....

December 11th, we had the honor and privilege to represent our Hawaiian community here in Utah by presenting an oli and makana for Tongan Royal Princess Pilolevu Tuita at the South Towne Expo Center. This month our club gathering will be on Saturday, January 28th. We'll have a fun yarn lei making activity, and learn some basic protocols for lei making and lei giving. FUN!! Bring the family down, potluck dinner to be served, please bring a dish to share!
We are also eagerly anticipating the release of Hokulani Aikau's new book, A Chosen People A Promised Land . While we are excited when Native Hawaiian authors present their works, this one is especially exciting for us. Hokulani is the daughter of Uncle Ned and Aunty Sharon Aikau, and while that enough is cause for us to celebrate this release, the subject matter of this work is one that has relevance for so many here. We encourage you to purchase a copy!

Within the next few weeks this blog will be undergoing some reconstruction, we're excited about that. We aim to make it more user friendly. MAHALO!!!

NOVEMBER ACTIVITIES!

Aloha!!! We have some fun and exciting news!! In addition to the above listed activity, we are also pleased to announce a "Hui 'Olelo Hawai'i" (E kala mai, unable to include proper diacriticals here) which will meet twice a month for the sole purpose of practicing conversing in our mother tongue. We'll also include cultural discussion on various topics such as oli, mo'olelo, wahi pana, na mele and more! All ages and abilities welcome, absolutely free of charge!!! Stay tuned for more information!

For this month, we have a few FUN and FREE activities! We're hosting a FREE COUPONING CLASS, AND A HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE ACTIVITY FOR NA KEIKI! While that's going on we'll also have Charlene Lui speaking on Convention highlights, some of the resolutions that were highly debated, and some of the other activities that took place there as well. Potluck, please bring your favorite dish to share with everyone!!

IT'S OCTOBER ALREADY?! :)

Here we are nearing mid October, so much is happening this month, we'll try to keep you informed of the little bits and pieces that might otherwise go overlooked! :)

GREAT NEWS!
California Governor Jerry Brown also signs AB 1088 into law in California! AB 1088 requires various state agencies to disaggregate data for Native Hawaiians & Pacific Islanders & Asian Americans, allowing for us to be counted accurately enabling us to better access services and programs our people need. The numbers will be more specific, allowing organizations to be better equipped in securing funds and allowing them to better respond to the needs of our people. Now if only all states followed suit it would be great....c'mon UTAH!

Today was a "holiday". Refraining from calling it "You Know Who Day", it's instead, being called Indigenous People's Day by MANY. SO much more appropriate. Now, for all of us FIRST Peoples.....this is what our club's Facebook status read today: Us being indigenous means that we were FIRST. As in FIRST PEOPLE. Mind you, we did not merely exist, we flourished and lived as vibrant, artistic, creative and highly spiritual people. We were the first scientists, conservationists, and spiritual giants. Thank us by recognizing these facts and appreciating, NOT appropriating our Native cultures.

Another bit of information for our community: It's Flu Season!! Having the Flu is never fun, having a FULL BLOWN bout of it is even worse. For the majority of us, we're all on Facebook. If you are, check out Ho'olaupa'i. It's a Native Hawaiian Newspaper Resource that is translating Hawaiian Newspaper articles and making them available for everyone to read/understand/enjoy. It is truly amazing work that they're doing, it's free, and it's beautiful! The literary contributions of our Hawaiian people are tremendous. TREMENDOUS.

Scholarship deadline and Clothing Drive!!

An important date to remember for those who are seeking or know of someone who is seeking scholarships! The Asian and Pacific Islander American Fund (APIASF) scholarship application for the class of 2012 will be available on the 1st of October

Although closed for 2011 - 2012 school year, another great resource is Liko A'e, which, unlike many other scholarships for Native Hawaiians, IS available for those on the Continent, by working through the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs! Again, although it's closed for this school year, make sure you bookmark the site! Another terrific service is that they provide scholarships for non-traditional students as well!

Our October activity is a Community Clothing Drive! With the economy, shelters and other organizations that serve the less fortunate are seeing a marked decrease in the amount of donations they receive. Please join us on October 15th for a clothing drive to help keep our community warm!!! All clothing and blanket donations will be delivered to The Road Home to assist those whose need may be greater than most of ours. Every person who donates will be automatically entered into a drawing for fun prizes! Need not be present to win! If you'd like to donate but are unable to make it that day, please feel free to call Tina at 801.913.8980 to make alternate arrangements prior to October 15th. We hope you're able to help!

July Gathering and 'Ohana Retreat!!!

Aloha!!!

We apologize for not being able to have our June gathering due to a scheduling conflict with the room we normally gather in. However, we WILL be showing the amazing film "Keepers of the Flame" by Eddie Kamae, which focuses on three INCREDIBLE Hawaiian women, Mary Puku'i, Edith Kanaka'ole and 'Iolani Luahine. Anyone interested in Hawaiian culture, history, hula won't want to miss this!!! In addition, we'll also have a free hula workshop for na keiki!!! FUN!!! Our gatherings are potluck, please bring your favorite dish to share.

We are also preparing for an 'Ohana Retreat, which will be on Saturday, August 6th at Lindon Harbor. We are so excited at being able to partner with Team Kalea, Kauwahi`Anaina Hawai`i Hawaiian Civic Club and Lei Aloha O Ka 'Ohana, making it truly a community event!!

We are VERY excited to once again be hosting a KEIKI FISHING TOURNAMENT!!! Open to kids ages 5 - 12, the tournament is FREE of charge, and no fishing license is required. However, please note, that all children participating MUST be accompanied and supervised by an parent or adult guardian AT ALL TIMES. As such, we've provided a link to download the 2011 Utah Fishing Guide which provides information on purchasing a Utah fishing license.

The tournament starts at 8:00 am sharp, on Saturday morning. Participants need to pre-register for an accurate headcount prior to the tournament as well as check in on the morning of the event.

For the `ohe kapala workshop, we will provide all materials EXCEPT the fabric to print on. Please bring your own scrap fabric pieces to practice stamping on.
