Ke Kauwela! Summertime!!!

We are excited.  We're thrilled.  We're eagerly anticipating this year's 'Ohana Retreat!!! It will be held on Saturday, August 4th at Lindon Harbor starting at 10 am.  Here's some things you'll need to know:

-Ho'ohana Competition:  What is it?? Family members in groups of 4 test their knowledge of Na Mea Hawai'i in the following areas: Wahi Pana (sacred, storied places), Language, General Knowledge and oneo other category.  How?  They'll answer trivia questions, a scavenger hunt for answers, complete puzzles and more!  FREE to enter to compete, FUN to participate in, and PRIZES will be awarded!!! To sign up to compete, just text or call 8019138980.  To keep things fair, Team may not consist of more than ONE Kumu (in any discipline).

Outrigger Canoe Races: Team Kalea, our awesome outrigger canoe club based out of Lindon Harbor will have a canoe race!  Potluck teams, 2 competitions.  18 and under, and 18 and over.  All interested in paddling will sign up and teams will be chosen and off you go!  If you've never paddled, mai hilahila!! (Don't be shy) we'll have a short canoe paddling workshop with some awesome seasoned paddlers prior to the race.  FUN!!

-Horseshoe Tournament: $2.00 entry fee per team, winner takes all.

-Ku'i Kalo: Mahalo to Malama Haloa O Utah!! Come learn how to make your own pa'i 'ai!!! Pa'i 'ai is mashed kalo with very little water, one pound of pa'i 'ai makes 2-3 pounds of poi.  There are tons of 'ONO recipes using kalo, such as poi mochi, poi andagi, pa'i 'ai pizza, pa'i 'ai cream cheese won tons and more.  Learn how to make your own, complete with cultural protocols! 'ONO!!!!

-Hula: Never danced hula?  Aunty Kathleen with Lei Aloha O Ka 'Ohana will be teaching a simple fun hula that all can do.

-Ipu Making Workshop: Led by Kupuna Vermine Haws, learn how to make your very own ipu for a minimal cost.  (Cost is to cover supplies)

Makahiki Games: Fun, great exercise and culturally invigorating!  Come test your skills and ulu maika, moa pahe'e and more!!

We are excited as once again we are coming together as a Native Hawaiian community with Hui Hawai'i O Utah Hawaiian Civic Club, Malama Haloa O Utah, Team Kalea, Lei Aloha O Ka 'Ohana as well as Kauwahi 'Anaina Hawai'i Hawaiian Civic Club all  participating to serve, support and engage our community.  All are welcome, POTLUCK meal, PLEASE BRING A DISH TO SHARE.
